I am trying to install build 5308 (64-bit) on an HP m7100y (3.0 Pentium D 830) and the system hangs at the very start of Phase 2.
I have two 20-GB partitions. The first part has Windows XP MCE 2005 installed on it so I can not launch the Vista Install from this OS (64-bit Setup.Exe won't run). When I try to install from a DVD boot I get to the very beginning of Phase 2 and the system just hangs. I have read other posts about installs that may take a long time, but I left the system running for 2 hours and nothing changed. I started the install at 6:34:02 and the last entry in the SETUPACT.LOG is at 6:36:33. I rebooted the system at 8:38:00
I have reviewed the SETUPACT.LOG and found all only three warnings that are included below (the rest were labeled "Info")
2006-03-03 18:34:02, Warning [0x090010] PANTHR No working dir has been given to panther. The temp dir for modules will be unavailable. Call WdsInitialize(ReInit=TRUE) to specify a working directory
2006-03-03 18:34:02, Warning [0x090022] PANTHR Couldn't create clean panther temp dir
2006-03-03 18:36:29, Warning [0x0a002d] UI Progress data: No time estimate reported on blackboard. Key=ProgressInfo\TransferPeImage
Please let me know if the entire log file or other data would help to resolve this issue.

System lockup of install at beginning of Phase 2 (5308 64-bi
MJ, so many persons are encountering this issue on their systems, so its obviously Vistas fault, no specific answer has been provided why its happening. I am going to submit this for you through bug reporting system and hopefully get some direct feedback. -- -- Andre Windows Connect | http://www.windowsconnected.com Extended64 | http://www.extended64.com Blog | http://www.extended64.com/blogs/andre http://spaces.msn.com/members/adacosta

Thanks for the help, Andre. Let me know if you need any more information. I am going to try the 32-bit version of Vista and see if that makes any difference.
